Applications to Akindolie Medical Scholarship now open

A medical scholarship set by lawyer and PRECIOUS awards ambassador, Funke Abimbola, to encourage future doctors from a BAME background, is now open for application.

The Akindolie Medical Scholarship was established in 2016 by Ms Abimbola, and her family to honour their father, the late Dr. Frank Olufemi Akindolie. The 2017 scholarship will comprise of one financial bursary of £1,500 together with a structured, year-long mentoring programme. It will be awarded to a medical student who is currently studying medicine at a UK medical school and is from a minority ethnic background.

To qualify, candidates will need to be studying at a UK medical school on a full-time basis with a strong academic record and a demonstrable commitment to giving back to society outside their medical studies. Whilst priority will be given to students at a medical school in London or Newcastle, all UK-based medical students are welcome to apply and will be considered.

Commenting on the reason for establishing the scholarship in 2016, Ms Abimbola,  said:

“Our father was a gifted, German trained doctor who built up a successful medical practice in Nigeria. He tragically died of liver cancer almost 5 years ago. We wanted to establish something permanent in our father’s name here in the UK, specifically to encourage future doctors.”

The winner of the 2016 scholarship was Folashade Oyewole, a 5th-year medical student at Imperial College, London. As well as being outstanding academically, throughout her schooling, she has taken positions that allow her to give back to society.

To apply, candidates can send their CV, a detailed covering letter and a 300-word statement explaining why they consider themselves the best candidate for the scholarship to: AkindolieScholarship@gmail.com.

“Although I chose to become a lawyer, I come from a family of doctors. Morale amongst junior hospital doctors in the UK is at an all-time low due to the challenges of working in an overly burdened healthcare system, says Ms Abimbola, “by doing this, we hope to encourage and support future doctors to remain committed to their medical careers despite the challenges they face.”

Applications close on 31st August 2017 and the scholarship will be awarded by the end of September 2017.
