Winners announced for 12th Annual PRECIOUS Awards

The winners have been announced for the 12th Annual PRECIOUS Awards.

The event, which took place at the Royal Horseguards Hotel, London, celebrated the achievements of women of colour in enterprise, leadership and industry.

Sponsored by Santander, Reed Smith, Vlisco, BAME Recruitment, the BIPC, and the Ilesha Charitable Trust – the Awards have gone from strength to strength, attracting backing from Theresa May PM and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

This year’s winners included:

SME Business of the Year: Roni Savage an engineer with a business that’s just turned over £2 million. Roni, who is a mum of three boys, has thrived in a traditionally male-dominated industry. She started her company Jomas Associates at the age of 29, back in 2009, an engineering and environmental consultancy, serving the construction industry and supporting the reclamation and development of brownfield sites across the UK. www.jomasassociates.com

Young Entrepreneur of the Year: Saira Hussain – at the age of just 22, and in a recession, Saira started Hussain Architectural Design, a female-led architectural and planning consultancy. Today, HAD is a successful business based in Burnley, Blackburn, Manchester and London.  www.hussainarchitecture.co.uk

Outstanding Women in Sport: Olympian Donna Fraser. The former sprinter competed at four consecutive Olympic Games for Great Britain before retiring and continues to work in sport with UK Athletics as its Equality, Diversity & Engagement Lead. Donna has shown grit and determination on and off the track. Battling through breast cancer, Donna went on to achieve a qualifying time to compete for trials at the 2012 Games.

‘So often women of colour are left out of the conversation around diversity and gender campaigns says Foluke Akinlose MBE, founder of the PRECIOUS Awards  ‘There is still an issue around the visibility of women of colour and the way our stories are portrayed in the world. If we are angry or getting hurt, that’s when you will see a picture of a woman of colour in the media. These awards are changing the narrative, proudly showcasing success stories. It’s an absolute honour to celebrate these trailblazing women’
