The 5 Routine Mistakes Busy Women Make With Their Skin

Skin Mentor Sandra Knight reveals the five routine mistakes busy women of colour make with their skin – and the simple fixes that will transform your
complexion for good.

You care about your skin, but between work, family, and everything else demanding your attention, skincare is often the first thing to get rushed or skipped altogether.

You don’t need an hour-long routine to take care of your skin properly. You just need to avoid a handful of common mistakes that quietly undo all your good intentions. Let’s go through them.

1. Treating Stress-Skin Like A Product Problem

Why it matters: Sometimes your skin isn’t reacting to what you’re putting on it – it’s reacting to what’s happening in your life.
Stress, poor sleep, and hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause all show up on the skin in real, visible ways. No amount of product- switching, no matter how expensive, will fix a problem that was never really about your routine in the first place.

How to fix it: If your skin suddenly changes and nothing in your routine has changed, look beyond the products on your shelf before you overhaul everything.

Tip: A consistent, gentle routine will serve you far better during stressful or hormonally turbulent seasons than a complicated one. Give your skin less to react to, not more.

The Takeaway:
You need to do the right things, consistently and well. Start with cleansing properly at night and wearing SPF every day. Those two changes alone will transform your skin more dramatically than any new product on the market ever could.

2. Sleeping In Yesterday’s Skin

Why it matters: Makeup, SPF, pollution and the day’s sweat all sit on top of the skin from morning until night.
Left on overnight, that buildup clogs pores, breaks down collagen and stops your skin from repairing itself while you sleep, which is when it does most of its real work. For women of colour, that nightly neglect often shows up not as breakouts but as dullness, congestion or pigmentation that just won’t budge no matter what you put on top of it.

How to fix it: A proper double cleanse at night – an oil-based cleanser to lift everything off, followed by a gentle water-based one – makes more difference to your skin than any expensive serum applied on top of an unclean face.

Tip: Keep micellar water and cotton pads on your nightstand for the nights you’re too tired to do the full routine. Wiping is always better than nothing.

3. Believing Your Skin Doesn’t Need SPF

Why it matters: “I don’t burn” is one of the most common things I hear from women of colour and it’s one of the costliest myths in skincare.

Melanin does offer some natural protection against UV rays, but doesn’t make you immune to sun damage. It just shows up differently on deeper skin tones
as pigmentation, uneven tone, and premature ageing rather than redness or burning. By the time you notice it, the damage has often been building for years.

How to fix it: A broad-spectrum SPF, applied every single morning, rain or shine, indoors or out, summer or winter.

Tip: Look for a lightweight, non-greasy mineral SPF formulated specially with deeper skin tones in mind. Many modern formulations have finally solved the grey or ashy cast that older sunscreens were known for, there’s no longer an excuse to skip this step.

4. Layering Products In The Wrong Order

Why it matters: When you’re rushing out the door, it’s easy to grab whatever’s closest and apply it in whatever order feels right. But active ingredients like vitamin C, retinol and exfoliating acids can cancel each other out, or worse, irritate and sensitise your skin – when layered incorrectly or stacked together.

How to fix it: Keep one simple rule in mind: thinnest to thickest. Cleanse, treat, moisturise, protect. That order rarely fails you.

Tip: If you only have time for one active product in your morning routine, make it vitamin C serum. It brightens, helps protect against environmental damage, and works beautifully underneath SPF.

5. Forgetting Your Neck and Hands

Why it matters: We spend so much time perfecting our facial skincare and completely forget two areas that often show the first visible signs of ageing and sun exposure – the neck and hands.
They’re exposed just as much as your face, yet they rarely receive a fraction of the same care.

How to fix it: Whatever product you apply to your face, sweep the leftover amount down your neck and onto the backs of your hands. It costs you nothing extra and it takes seconds.

Tip: Keep a hand cream with SPF in your bag. It quietly does double duty without adding a single extra step to your day.
